Philippa as a Designer
And Philippa as a person…
Life can be filled with twists and turns; for me design was never where I thought I’d be but I am beyond grateful to now be in this profession.
To save you the long story, after leaving the University of Exeter, where I studied History and Maths, due to an eating disorder, my early career found me bookselling, working in events and then carrying the weight of some rather serious business development in a lifestyle brand. As someone who never took art GCSE it was the window displays and event and marketing collateral at a range of workplaces that brought my back to my childhood love of calligraphy and handlettering. With a strategic and streamline focus to my role at the time a deep desire for something more creative kicked in and I finally took the step to get my degree in Graphic Communications at the University of Reading, specialising in typography, where I was offered a place to complete the degree in just two years.
From there the rest has been a love affair with the design world, with a strong academic focus and interest in history as well as a search of reason and precision (I think that’s the maths talking). With experience in children’s publishing, agency life, family businesses, print-only and primarily digital-only environments I’m so immensely proud of the tools, experience, insight and knowledge that I have both in the design community and workplace but outside of that too.
Outside of work there are no greater joys in life than a long run and baked goods! Give me fresh air, my spring flowers, a touch of pink and my beautiful community and I thrive. I read a lot of fiction, a fair amount of design books too and history podcasts are surprisingly good to run to! I’ve sometimes been mistaken for working in the food industry or being a food critic; I spend a lot of time at the latest restaurants, never fancy ones though, and staring at the fun art of the natural wine label display that we are seeing more and more. As a collaborator and team player I’d like to think it’s nice to see that I’m a real person so here are a few images that show you who I am (with a strong colour palette in life!).
